In the year 1965, the Government of Tamilnadu Started Periyar EVR College in Tiruchirappalli, the central part of Tamilnadu, naming it after the grate thinker and social reformer, Periyar E.V.Ramasamy who generously parted with Rs.5 Lakhs and 9.65 acres of land for the exclusive purpose of imparting higher education to the people in and around Tiruchirappalli. The unique feature of this college, which is in consonance with the intent of Periyar, is that it caters to the academic needs and aspiration of the students belonging generally to educationally, socially and economically backward sections and particularly to SC/ST, most of whom are first generation learners.
The first ever development of the college was marked by the immediate acquisition of additional land making it an expansive campus of 52.62 acres. Then came up gradually the classrooms, laboratories and hostel one after the other, consequent to the steadily swelling student strength.
In the annals of the college, the academic year 1998-1999 proved to be significant on two counts. The college become co-educational, providing girl students access to higher education; the college also become autonomous, resulting in a sea change in aims, aspirations and achievements of the institution. The institution reached another milestone in
1999 when the NAAC team visited it and accredited it with the three-star status.
Over the years, the institution has added several under-graduate and post-graduate programmes to the already existing ones in the faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. While the departments of Zoology, Physics, Commerce and History provide full-time research facilities, several others offer facilities for part-time research.
